Choosing a Coffee or Centre Table Size

Choose a coffee or centre table that is easy to reach from the seating while leaving room for legs and walking routes. A length around two-thirds of the nearby sofa's usable seating run is a common starting point, not a product specification. Mark the proposed shape on the floor and test it from every seat you expect to use.

01

What coffee-table length suits my sofa?

A table around two-thirds of the nearby sofa's seating run is a familiar rule of thumb, but it is only a starting point for proportions. Consider the seats that will actually use the table, not just the overall width of a room arrangement. Very deep arms, a chaise or separate chairs can change the useful position. Tape out a few lengths and try reaching from each seat. Compare the selected outline with the actual table dimensions, including any projecting top or base, before deciding what works in your room.

02

How much space should I leave between sofa and coffee table?

Roughly 35 to 45 cm between the seat edge and table can be a useful starting gap for reaching and moving your legs. It is not a guaranteed comfortable distance for everyone. Test sitting down, standing up and passing the table with your usual seating arrangement. Keep the main walking route separate where possible; a busy route may need about 75 to 90 cm or more. Allow additional space for individual mobility needs and check that the table base does not project into the clearance you have measured.

03

How high should a coffee table be beside a sofa?

A top roughly level with the sofa seat, or a little lower, is a common starting relationship. Compare it with the height of the actual seat rather than a generic sofa dimension. Soft cushions compress when occupied, so check reach while someone is sitting normally. An unusually high or low seat may need a different arrangement. Use a safe temporary surface or a measured drawing to assess reach, without balancing heavy objects on an unstable substitute. Confirm the actual table height and edge position before selecting a piece.

04

Should I choose a round or rectangular centre table?

Let the seating arrangement and circulation suggest the shape. A round or oval outline can reduce projecting corners along a narrow route, while a rectangular outline may follow a long sofa more naturally. Shape alone does not establish stability, suitability for children or comfortable reach. Check the base, edges and surface requirements for the actual piece. Try walking around a taped outline and reaching from different seats. Include any surrounding chairs and their movement instead of assessing the table against the sofa in isolation.

05

Where should a coffee table sit with a sectional sofa?

Begin with the main sitting positions and the space inside the arrangement. On an L-shaped sofa, the chaise can make the clear central area quite different from the sofa's overall outside dimensions. Place a paper or tape outline in that area and test access from both sides. Keep enough room to get past the chaise end without turning sideways. More than one small surface may suit some layouts, but each still needs a clear route around it. Do not fill every gap simply because a tabletop fits.

06

What should I check before choosing a coffee or centre table?

Check the actual overall dimensions, top and base footprint, finish and care requirements on the product page, asking our team where details need clarification. Furniture is made to order in our own factory in Noida. A styled photograph does not establish a table's measurements or the suitability of a finish for a particular use. Include the route into the room in your plan, especially narrow turns or stairs. Confirm any separately agreed specification before ordering rather than treating these general layout rules as details of an individual piece.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered

Something not covered? Write to mail@saeshliving.com.

Are coffee tables and centre tables always different sizes?

No. The names can overlap in everyday use. Check the actual dimensions, height and intended position of the individual piece rather than relying on its category name.

Should I count a chaise when estimating coffee-table length?

Plan around the seating positions and clear central space that will use the table. The outside length of a chaise arrangement does not necessarily describe that usable area.

Can a very low coffee table work with a high sofa seat?

It may be inconvenient to reach. Test the relationship while seated, allowing for cushion compression, and compare actual heights instead of choosing on appearance alone.

How do I allow for a rug beneath a coffee table?

Include the rug's footprint and thickness in the arrangement, keep its edges clear of trip-prone routes and check that the table stands evenly on the intended surface.
